Anorexia, and Symptoms

Anorexia is usually a problem occurring in younger people. Often taking place during the pubescent years, sufferers will normally refrain from eating or eat very little to avoid putting on any weight. Quite shockingly, only ten percent of anorexia sufferers are boys. This backs up a theory that people who suffer from anorexia have a particularly negative view of their personal appearance, namely, their weight. Although in reality patients maybe dangerously thin and malnourished, they would still look at themselves as being overweight.

Since eating disorders are usually a medical and psychological problem, treatment usually includes working with more than one person in order to get back to full health. Usually treatment plans are customized to fit the child or teen's needs, but typically involve a team of specialists: a therapist, a nutritionist, and a doctor or nurse practitioner. Treatment or help can be found several ways: through a hospital or residential facility, through therapy session and diet consultation, or a combination of some or all of the previously mentioned options. Let's take a look at how treatment usually happens.

We as normal human beings are fun of eating, we eat what we want, then if we think that we are gaining more weight, we go to the gym have some exercise to lose all the calories and fats we gained, but we are never scared of gaining too much weight. But there are some people who are really scared of gaining weight, in medical term they are those who are called Anorexic, those people or usually teenagers who are scared of gaining weight because they are afraid to be teased, hate by family members, will not be accepted in the social group they want to be with. Here are some of the facts about anorexia.

The skin wrinkles are actually a sign that her body has shrunk more than her skin can even contract. Her skin doesn't seem to fir her undersized body anymore because of her behavior. As the anorexic loses more and more weight, she cant help but to think about food all the time. She may even start to develop a sleep disorder because she constantly thinks about food and eating. These thoughts lead her to think that if she gives in to eating she will become fat. The young girl's brain is trying to tell her to eat before she dies of starvation. She remains confused and continues her behavior to limit her intake and food and drinks in order to remain thin. Later on the anorexic may even develop a phobia of food and liquid along with a phobia of fat.

The anorexic is now comfortable engaging in her anorexic behavior. She feels as if people are jealous of her being of her new weight loss. A sure way for family to recognize that their daughter has reached the third stage is to take note of her requesting special demands in order for her to eat. For example, when going out to eat she may take forever to choose a meal because it's not the perfect fat free meal. Even if a meal is perfectly healthy she will always seem to find something wrong. When someone in the kitchen is cooking a meal she will watch over them to make sure their making a fat free meal or not adding any extra calories. She will make comments like "I can't eat when you're in the kitchen" or "I can't be around when you're cooking". These are signs that the disorder is getting worse.

Conflict doesn't bother the girl anymore as she becomes accustomed to it. After a while she becomes empowered in defense of her anorexic behavior. This one area in her life is very important to her and makes her feel good about herself along with her actions. The young girl confirms that she has reached the third stage when she starts to request special demands of her family for her to eat. For instance, when going out to eat with the family the young girl may not be satisfied with the menu because there is no perfect fat free meal.

Symptoms

The main behavior pattern associated with anorexia nervosa, as has been explained already is the refusal to eat. This refusal extends to not just treats but the basic nutritional requirements your body needs to stay alive. The threshold for being considered anorexic is when your body weight is less than eight five percent of normal for you height and age. The refusal of food is based on two usual patterns, namely calorie counting and eliminating certain food groups entirely. It is not unusual for anorexics to only eat a few hundred calories a day. They may also eliminate carbohydrates entirely from the diet. Fat is almost always completely eliminated.

What are the signs and symptoms of anorexia?
People who have anorexia love to live in secrecy so that no one can know about their condition. In this situation, it is very hard for doctors to properly diagnose them and treat them.
Some of the common symptoms of anorexia are:
• Dramatic weight loss.
• Excessive consciousness about figure and body image.
• Regular skipping of meals.
• Mostly eat selective foods, which are low in fat and calories.
• Good cook but try to avoid meal.
• Usually wear loose clothes to hide thinness.
• Strong exercise regimen.
• Skip social gatherings, especially dinner or lunch parties.
• In males decreased libido and in females irregular menstrual periods.

Anorexia nervosa often starts between the ages of 15 and 25, but it can develop in children as young as 10 and in older people. Anorexia nervosa" is frequently shortened to "anorexia" in both the popular media and scientific literature. Many persons with this disorder restrict their intake to fewer than 1,000 calories per day. Most avoid fattening, high-calorie foods and eliminate meats. The diet of persons with anorexia nervosa may consist almost completely of low-calorie vegetables like lettuce and carrots, or popcorn. Persons with anorexia nervosa develop strange eating habits such as cutting their food into tiny pieces, refusing to eat in front of others, or fixing elaborate meals for others that they themselves don't eat.
